Time for a haircut?

At our house, this elicits a lot of different responses. The littlest one is a great customer. He sits perfectly still and looks wherever the stylist tells him to. The gameboy is just starting to cave into the "longer hair" mentality, but usually ends up with the "Daddy Do" (very short). Hubby can't wait to get a haircut for himself, and enjoys torturing the tween by threatening a buzzcut. His teasing is especially successful when coupled with remarks about putting barrettes and bows in his hair. Yes, the latest trend in tween to teen boys' haircuts is long, and my young man has embraced that. Unfortunately for him, the one thing his parents won't stand for is hair longer than his collar. I've tried to compromise a bit by letting him keep it longer at the top and sides, but then we run into two problems: it's impossible to find someone around here who doesn't cut it all off when we ask for a trim (don't these people watch the Disney channel?) and it requires frequent trims.

Since I'm a bit frugal (in my case that also means cheap), since the kiddos and I all prefer not to approach a retail center of any kind together, and since no matter what we ask for, my son always ends up with the same short haircut, I've started cutting the boys hair at home. Let me just say, this is not one of my natural talents (my oldest is still more satisfied with this haircut than the one he gets at the haircut place).
