Something's not quite right here. . .

I spoke with a mom a few days ago who said she wasn't happy with her math program, but didn't see how she could change it. It had been quite expensive, and she didn't want to spend more money on a program that she was not familiar with. I think this is something that happens fairly frequently. Many homeschooling families get by financially with this economic conservativism. It's usually a very good thing.

In this case however, the money you're saving by not trying out a new program is just not worth it. The course may be highly praised and great for many people, but if you know it's not working out for you and your family, then it's just not going to do. You'll save a year full of frustration for you and your child if you get something new and put the old one aside.

Don't let that old program fester though. If you have younger children, you can try it out again with one of them. It may be a perfect fit for your other darling. If it clashes with your teaching style, however, you might consider selling the non-consumeable portions (textbook, software, accessories, etc). If the program tempted you to buy it in the first place, it is probably a solid program even if it is not quite right for your family. You can always sell it at a consignment shop, or even advertise it for sale within your homeschool group to recoup some of your losses. That next frugal mom will also appreciate the discount she gets from buying a used text.

Start looking for that new math or language or history book right now. Your time and your child's education are most precious resources.
